Gene:
ubiquitin specific protease 16
Description:
The protein encoded by this gene is a deubiquitinating enzyme that is phosphorylated at the onset of mitosis and then dephosphorylated at the metaphase/anaphase transition. A mutant form of the encoded protein was shown to block cell division, and it may be that this enzyme acts on H2A and H2B, the major ubiquitinated proteins of chromatin. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
