Gene:
deiodinase, iodothyronine, type III
Description:
Type III iodothyronine deiodinase, a selenoprotein, is an important enzyme for thyroid hormone inactivation. It catalyzes the inner ring deiodination of the prohormone thyroxine (T4) and of the bioactive hormone 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T3) to 3,3'-T2 to inactive metabolites. Selenocysteine, at aa position 144, is essential for efficient enzyme activity. The expression of this enzyme in placenta and several fetal tissues during early development, suggests that it plays a role in the regulation of thyroid hormone inactivation during embryologic development.
