The protein encoded by this gene is a lipid-requiring mitochondrial membrane enzyme. This protein has a specific requirement of phosphatidylcholine for optimal enzymatic function and is a member of the short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase superfamily. Three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
