Gene:
clathrin, heavy polypeptide-like 1
Description:
Clathrin heavy chain is the main structural protein of the polyhedral lattice surrounding coated pits and coated vesicles, organelles that are involved in intracellular transport of membrane-associated components. CLTCL1 is ubiquitously expressed in fetal tissue, but expressed only in certain adult tissues, particularly skeletal muscle, indicating that certain specialized functions of clathrins may lie at the level of gene diversity. Two isoforms of CLTCL which differ in the presence of one alternatively spliced exon have been isolated. The additional 56 amino acids in trancript variant 2 overlap the alpha-helical coiled-coil domain involved in light chain interactions and are immediately adjacent to the trimerization domain.
