Description:
Apolipoprotein(a) is the distinguishing protein moiety of lipoprotein(a), of which elevated plasma levels are correlated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. The protein encoded by this gene is secreted and is structurally similar to apolipoprotein(a), although apolipoprotein(a) contains many kringle domain repeats while this protein contains only a single kringle domain. Kringle domains have been shown to mediate protein-protein interactions. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene.
