Caspases are cysteine proteases that cleave C-terminal aspartic acid residues on their substrate molecules. CASP12 is most highly related to members of the ICE subfamily (see CASP1; MIM 147678) of caspases that process inflammatory cytokines. In rodents, Casp12 mediates apoptosis in response to endoplasmic reticulum stress. Human CASP12, however, appears to be nonfunctional (Fischer et al., 2002).[supplied by OMIM]
