The protein encoded by this gene is a 69-kD peptide autoantigen associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Alternate splicing within the coding region generates 3 transcript variants. All three splice variants encode the conserved T-cell epitope (in exon 2) recognized by autoreactive T cells in diabetic children.
