Studies will be completed in 28 patients with depression; both males and females. Patients will be studied both untreated and during administration of a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. They will be either newly diagnosed with depression, untreated patients suffering a recent relapse, or patients seeking to switch from a non-SSRI antidepressant due to non-response. The turnover of chemical messengers in the brain will be estimated by high internal jugular venous blood sampling and DNA will be isolated and examined from blood cells. Immune function will also be assessed. Whole body and cardiac sympathetic nervous activity will be determined, as well as microneurographic recording of muscle sympathetic nervous activity.\n\nIt is hypothesised that patients with depression and no existing demonstrable cardiac disease demonstrate:\n\nAlterations in brain monoaminergic neurotransmitter turnover, resulting in sympathetic nervous activation and dysregulation of the baroreflex control to both the heart (vagal) and muscle vasoconstrictor sympathetic nerves; and Exhibit enhanced platelet reactivity predisposing them to thrombogenesis and myocardial ischaemia.\n\nTherapeutic intervention with an SSRI will modify cardiac sympathetic function, baroreflex sensitivity or platelet reactivity in a fashion likely to reduce cardiac risk."}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'FEMALE', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '75 Years', 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Major depression\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* heart disease diabetes hypertension psychosis significant suicidal risk dementia'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00168493', 'briefTitle': 'The Neurobiology of Depressive Illness', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Baker Heart Research Institute'}, 'officialTitle': 'The Neurobiology of Depressive Illness: Causes and Consequences of Altered Brain Monoaminergic Function', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'NHMRC D-01'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'ACTIVE_COMPARATOR', 'label': 'intervention', 'description': 'there is no sham or placebo control arm It is a single arm study', 'interventionNames': ['Drug: antidepressants primarily selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'antidepressants primarily selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors', 'type': 'DRUG', 'description': 'normal clinical dosages used according to clinical response as determined by a psychiatrist', 'armGroupLabels': ['intervention']}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '3', 'city': 'Melbourne', 'state': 'Victoria', 'status': 'RECRUITING', 'country': 'Australia', 'contacts': [{'name': 'David A Barton, MBBS', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'email': 'david.barton@bigpond.com', 'phone': '61393428946'}, {'name': 'David a Barton, m', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR'}], 'facility': 'Baker Heart Research Institute', 'geoPoint': {'lat': -37.814, 'lon': 144.96332}}], 'centralContacts': [{'name': 'David A Barton, MBBSFRANZCP', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'email': 'david.barton@bigpond.com', 'phone': '61393428946'}, {'name': 'Murray Esler, PhD Fracp', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'email': 'Murray.Esler@baker.edu.au', 'phone': '61385321338'}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Murray A Esler, MBBS Phd', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Baker Heart Research Insitute'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Baker Heart Research Institute', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'collaborators': [{'name': 'National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia', 'class': 'OTHER'}], 'responsibleParty': {'oldNameTitle': 'Dr David Barton', 'oldOrganization': 'Baker Heart Research Institute'}}}}
