Upon completion of the intervention, patients proceed to the Preoperative Holding Area of the Surgery and Post Anesthesia Care Unit where they receive the standard of care for lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy, mastectomy, or mastectomy with lymph node dissection.\n\nPatients undergo collection of demographic information (i.e., age; gender; ethnicity; marital/partnered status; spiritual practice; family members in the home; stress management history; experience with the continuum of imagery/hypnosis practices; perceptions of concentration abilities; and favorite aromas, colors, and scenes from nature) at the time of consent using the Demographic Survey Questionnaire. They also undergo assessment of physical and psychological symptoms (i.e., pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and generalized distress) at baseline (immediately prior to hypnotic induction) and after the intervention (prior to discharge from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit).'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'FEMALE', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Diagnosis of breast cancer\n* Scheduled for breast surgery (i.e., lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy, mastectomy, or mastectomy with lymph node dissection) with Dr. Garbaroglio\n* Hormone receptor status not specified\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Menopausal status not specified\n* Able to speak and read English\n* Able to follow instruction\n* No uncontrolled major comorbid mental conditions (i.e., thought disorders)\n* No uncontrolled major physical conditions (i.e., untreated congestive heart failure)\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\n* See Disease Characteristics\n* No concurrent reconstruction surgery'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00748267', 'briefTitle': 'Hypnosis in Reducing Pain and Other Side Effects in Women Undergoing Surgery for Breast Cancer', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'City of Hope Medical Center'}, 'officialTitle': 'Use of Pre-Operative Hypnosis to Reduce Post-Operative Pain and Anesthesia Related Side-Effects', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': '08029'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'P30CA033572', 'link': 'https://reporter.nih.gov/quickSearch/P30CA033572', 'type': 'NIH'}, {'id': 'CHNMC-08029'}, {'id': 'CDR0000612523', 'type': 'REGISTRY', 'domain': 'NCI PDQ'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'questionnaire administration', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'hypnotherapy', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}, {'name': 'therapeutic conventional surgery', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '91010-3000', 'city': 'Duarte', 'state': 'California', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 34.13945, 'lon': -117.97729}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Michael Lew, MD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'City of Hope Medical Center', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'collaborators': [{'name': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)', 'class': 'NIH'}], 'responsibleParty': {'oldNameTitle': 'Michael Lew', 'oldOrganization': 'City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center'}}}}
