Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is more effective for cancer of unknown primary origin.\n\nPURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of two different regimens of combination chemotherapy in treating patients with cancer of unknown primary origin.', 'detailedDescription': 'OBJECTIVES:\n\n* Compare the overall survival after treatment with paclitaxel, carboplatin, and etoposide and after treatment with fluorouracil and leucovorin calcium in patients with adenocarcinoma of unknown primary.\n* Compare the response rates, progression free survival, toxicity profile, and quality of life between the two regimens in these patients.\n\nOUTLINE: This is a randomized, multicenter study. Patients are stratified by center and presence or absence of liver metastases.\n\nPatients are randomly assigned to one of two treatment arms.\n\n* Arm I: Patients receive paclitaxel IV over 1 hour and carboplatin IV over 30 minutes on day 1, and oral etoposide on days 1-10. Treatment is repeated every 3 weeks for up to four courses.\n* Arm II: Patients receive leucovorin calcium IV over 2 hours followed by fluorouracil IV over 24 hours weekly for 6 weeks. Treatment is repeated every 7 weeks for up to two courses.\n\nPatients are followed every 3 months after treatment for 1 year or until death. Quality of life questionnaires are completed at each follow-up.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: Approximately 120-140 patients will be accrued for this study within 3 years.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of any differentiation grade\n\n * Excludes the following "treatable" conditions:\n\n * Axillary node involvement\n * Peritonitis carcinomatosis\n * Blastic bone metastases and/or elevated PSA\n * Squamous cell cancer with cervical or inguinal presentation\n * Poorly differentiated carcinoma\n\n * Neuroendocrine tumors OR\n * Tumors located in the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, or nodes\n* At least one measurable metastatic site\n* No brain or meningeal metastases\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\nAge:\n\n* Over 18\n\nPerformance status:\n\n* ECOG 0-2\n\nHematopoietic:\n\n* Leukocyte count at least 4,000/mm3\n* Thrombocyte count at least 100,000/mm3\n\nHepatic:\n\n* Bilirubin less than 1.4 mg/dL\n* AST and ALT less than 3 times upper limit of normal\n* No cirrhosis of the liver\n\nRenal:\n\n* Creatinine less than 1.7 mg/dL\n\nCardiovascular:\n\n* At least 3 months since myocardial infarction\n* No congestive heart failure, tachydysrhythmia, or unstable angina pectoris\n\nOther:\n\n* Not pregnant or nursing\n* Negative pregnancy test\n* No active infection\n* No other serious illness or medical condition\n* No current or prior malignancy except nonmelanomatous skin cancer or carcinoma in situ of the cervix\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\nBiologic therapy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nChemotherapy:\n\n* No prior chemotherapy\n\nEndocrine therapy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nRadiotherapy:\n\n* At least 4 weeks since prior radiotherapy (no greater than 25% of bone marrow)\n\nSurgery:\n\n* Not specified'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00003558', 'briefTitle': 'Chemotherapy in Treating Patients With Cancer of Unknown Primary Origin', 'organization': {'class': 'NIH', 'fullName': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)'}, 'officialTitle': 'A Randomized Phase III Trial of Paclitaxel, Carboplatin and Etoposide Vs. 5-Fluorouracil and Folinic Acid in the Treatment of Patients With Adenocarcinoma of Unknown Primary Site', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'DUT-KWF-CKVO-9801'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'CDR0000066622', 'type': 'REGISTRY', 'domain': 'PDQ (Physician Data Query)'}, {'id': 'EU-98023'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'carboplatin', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'etoposide', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'fluorouracil', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'leucovorin calcium', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'paclitaxel', 'type': 'DRUG'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '6202 AZ', 'city': 'Maastricht', 'country': 'Netherlands', 'facility': 'Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 50.84833, 'lon': 5.68889}}, {'zip': '5022 GC', 'city': 'Tilburg', 'country': 'Netherlands', 'facility': 'St. Elisabeth Ziekenhuis', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 51.55551, 'lon': 5.0913}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'R.
