The use of calf muscle neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) during the hospitalised recovery period on this patient group may be effective at preventing DVT. However, the haemodynamic effectiveness and comfort characteristics of NMES in post-THA patients immediately following surgery have yet to be established.\n\nThe main objectives are:\n\n1. To establish if patients in the early post-operative period have tolerance for NMES.\n2. To determine if applying NMES to patients immediately post-THA increases venous outflow from the lower limb over resting conditions.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '90 Years', 'minimumAge': '30 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty the previous day\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Patients with Diabetes Mellitus\n* Patients with Peripheral Vascular Disease\n* Patients currently involved in another trial\n* Previous diagnosis of DVT'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT01785251', 'briefTitle': 'Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Following Total Hip Arthroplasty', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland'}, 'officialTitle': 'Haemodynamic Performance of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) During Recovery From Total Hip Arthroplasty', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'EE-NMES-DVT-011'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'EXPERIMENTAL', 'label': 'NMES', 'description': 'Application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the calf muscles of the patient in order to elicit contraction of the calf muscle pump and thus, eject venous blood proximally.', 'interventionNames': ['Device: Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation', 'type': 'DEVICE', 'description': 'Applied using a custom built, medically approved stimulator called the Duo-STIM.
