Although differences in pain sensitivity between women and men are partly attributable to social conditioning and to psychosocial factors, many laboratory studies of humans have described sex differences in sensitivity to noxious stimuli, suggesting that biological mechanisms underlie such differences. Some animal studies have suggested that sensitivity to pain decreases during pregnancy because of the progressive activation of endogenous pain inhibitory systems. This effect may be mediated by pregnancy-associated hormones, in particular progesterone."}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'FEMALE', 'stdAges': ['ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '45 Years', 'minimumAge': '19 Years', 'samplingMethod': 'NON_PROBABILITY_SAMPLE', 'studyPopulation': 'Healthy term pregnant women', 'healthyVolunteers': True, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* healthy pregnant women at term (\\>37GA)\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* chronic pain\n* regular analgesic medication\n* severe cardiopulmonary problems\n* very difficult intravenous access\n* advanced labor\n* precipitous delivery'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00699595', 'acronym': 'HEPP', 'briefTitle': 'Hormonal Effects on Pain Perception', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}, 'officialTitle': 'Hormonal Effects on Pain Perception', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'F070721003'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'label': 'Term pregnant women', 'description': 'Healthy women scheduled for elective Cesarean section.'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '35294', 'city': 'Birmingham', 'state': 'Alabama', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 33.52066, 'lon': -86.80249}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Michael Froelich, MD, MS', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'investigatorTitle': 'Principal Investigator', 'investigatorFullName': 'Michael Froelich', 'investigatorAffiliation': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}}}}
