To achieve this objective, this proposal outlines the following specific aims:\n\nAim #1. To identify from BALF and serum, the change in inflammatory and genetic markers in patients with a history of COPD undergoing CABG. BALF and serum samples will be obtained at the time of intubation immediately prior to surgery and again upon skin closure immediately after the surgical procedure.\n\nAim #2. To determine the extent to which inflammatory and/or genetic markers correlate with post-operative pulmonary complications defined as prolonged mechanical ventilation (\\> 24 hours), pneumonia, and/or tracheostomy.\n\nAim #3. To inform the development and implementation of a large pivotal trial which may impact clinical decision-making during the initial pre-operative outpatient assessment of COPD patients undergoing CABG.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '89 Years', 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'samplingMethod': 'PROBABILITY_SAMPLE', 'studyPopulation': 'patients from Cardiothoracic surgery service', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Undergoing elective CABG\n* Current diagnosis of COPD\n* Ability to provide signed informed consent to participate\n* \\> 18 years of age\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Concomitant valve surgery\n* Urgent or emergent coronary surgery\n* Current steroid therapy\n* Active smoker and/or positive urine co-nicotine'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT01366469', 'acronym': 'CABG BALF', 'briefTitle': 'Inflammatory Biomarkers Predict Pulmonary Outcomes in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Emory University'}, 'officialTitle': 'Inflammatory Biomarkers Predict Pulmonary Outcomes in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'IRB00046469'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'CABG BALF', 'type': 'OTHER', 'domain': 'Other'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '30308', 'city': 'Atlanta', 'state': 'Georgia', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'Emory University Hospital Midtown', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 33.749, 'lon': -84.38798}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Omar M Lattouf, MD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Emory University'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Emory University', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'investigatorTitle': 'Professor of Surgery', 'investigatorFullName': 'Omar Lattouf', 'investigatorAffiliation': 'Emory University'}}}}
