EUS-guided biopsies yield a definitive diagnosis in greater than 80% of cases. In 15-20% of the cases, a definitive diagnosis cannot be made despite multiple attempts. One of the reasons why a diagnosis cannot be made is due to the focal location of the cancer; i.e., the cancer can be situated in a corner of a big mass and the needle fails to sample the cancer cells. The fanning technique is a method where the needle moves in multiple directions within a mass and therefore there is a better chance of the cancer cells being sampled compared to the standard technique where the needle moves in only one direction. The diagnostic performance of both these techniques has not been compared in a randomized fashion.', 'detailedDescription': 'Fanning technique: Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) performed in multiple directions within a mass.\n\nStandard technique: FNA performed in unidirectional fashion.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '90 Years', 'minimumAge': '19 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Age \\> 19 years\n* Solid Pancreatic Mass Lesions\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Age \\< 19 years\n* Coagulopathy\n* Unable to consent'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT01501903', 'briefTitle': 'Standard Versus Fanning Techniques for Endoscopic Ultrasound-Fine Needle Aspiration (EUS-FNA)', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}, 'officialTitle': 'Randomized Trial Comparing the Standard and Fanning Techniques for Fine Needle Aspiration of Pancreatic Mass Lesions at Endoscopic Ultrasound', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'F110907002'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'ACTIVE_COMPARATOR', 'label': 'Standard', 'description': 'Biopsy using standard technique of FNA', 'interventionNames': ['Procedure: Standard']}, {'type': 'OTHER', 'label': 'Fanning', 'description': 'Biopsy using fanning technique', 'interventionNames': ['Procedure: Fanning']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'Standard', 'type': 'PROCEDURE', 'otherNames': ['Standard Versus Fanning Techniques for EUS-FNA'], 'description': 'FNA in a single plane', 'armGroupLabels': ['Standard']}, {'name': 'Fanning', 'type': 'PROCEDURE', 'otherNames': ['Standard Versus Fanning Techniques for EUS-FNA'], 'description': 'FNA in multiple planes', 'armGroupLabels': ['Fanning']}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '35294', 'city': 'Birmingham', 'state': 'Alabama', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'UAB', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 33.52066, 'lon': -86.80249}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Shyam Varadarajulu, MD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Shyam Varadarajulu', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'SPONSOR_INVESTIGATOR', 'investigatorTitle': 'Principal Investigator', 'investigatorFullName': 'Shyam Varadarajulu', 'investigatorAffiliation': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham'}}}}
