The production of animal-based proteins sources is associated with growing environmental and ethical challenges. As such, sustainable alternatives are needed. Algae are sustainably produced high-protein sources and it is predicted that algae will become one of the most consumed proteins in the next decades. However, the effects of algae on the stimulation of muscle mass growth are unknown. Therefore, we aim to assess the rate of digestion and absorption, and the effects on muscle growth of two types of algae (spirulina and chlorella) when compared to a sustainable non-animal derived fungal reference protein (mycoprotein), a source known to elicit a robust anabolic response.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '40 Years', 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': True, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* BMI between 18.5 and 30\n* Recreationally active (\\<3 times per week structured resistance exercise training)\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Any metabolic impairment\n* Any cardiovascular impairment\n* High blood pressure (\\>140/90 mmHg)\n* A personal history of epilepsy, seizures or schizophrenia\n* Smoking\n* Chronic (\\>1 month) use of over the counter pharmaceuticals\n* Chronic (\\>2 months) use of amino acid or protein supplements\n* Allergic to Quorn/mycoprotein or algae products'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT05016557', 'acronym': 'SCAM', 'briefTitle': 'The Muscle Protein Synthetic Response of Algal and Fungal Protein', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'University of Exeter'}, 'officialTitle': 'The Muscle Protein Synthetic Response Following the Ingestion of a Single Bolus of Algal Protein When Compared to Fungal Protein in Healthy Young Adults', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': '200506/B/01'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'EXPERIMENTAL', 'label': 'Mycoprotein', 'description': 'Bolus ingestion of mycoprotein providing 25g protein', 'interventionNames': ['Dietary Supplement: Protein ingestion']}, {'type': 'EXPERIMENTAL', 'label': 'Spirulina', 'description': 'Bolus ingestion of spirulina providing 25g protein', 'interventionNames': ['Dietary Supplement: Protein ingestion']}, {'type': 'EXPERIMENTAL', 'label': 'Chlorella', 'description': 'Bolus ingestion of chlorella providing 25g protein', 'interventionNames': ['Dietary Supplement: Protein ingestion']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'Protein ingestion', 'type': 'DIETARY_SUPPLEMENT', 'description': 'Bolus ingestion of 25g protein', 'armGroupLabels': ['Chlorella', 'Mycoprotein', 'Spirulina']}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': 'EX1 2LU', 'city': 'Exeter', 'state': 'Devon', 'country': 'United Kingdom', 'facility': 'University of Exeter', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 50.7236, 'lon': -3.52751}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Benjamin T Wall, PhD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Professor of Nutritional Physiology'}]}, 'ipdSharingStatementModule': {'ipdSharing': 'NO'}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'University of Exeter', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'SPONSOR'}}}}
