Butyrate proved to increase HbF production in vivo and in vitro studies. Nonetheless, its short half-life limited its utilization in clinical practice. Gum Arabic (GA) is edible, dried, gummy exudate from Acacia Senegal tree. GA fermentation by colonic bacteria increases serum butyrate concentrations. The investigators hypothesized regular intake of GA will increase serum butyrate level. The latter will induce fetal hemoglobin production and ameliorate patients' symptoms. 47 patients hemoglobin SS aged 5-42 years, on regular follow up in Military hospital were recruited from April 2014 to January 2015 Patients received dose of G A 30g/day for 12 weeks. Hb F, complete blood count and Erythropoietin level were measured. The main outcome of interest was the level of HbF after 12 weeks."}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['CHILD', 'ADULT'], 'maximumAge': '50 Years', 'minimumAge': '5 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n1. over 5 year old\n2. less t5han 50\n3. diagnosed with homozygous sickle cell anemia by Hb electrophoresis\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n1\\. patients received blood transfusion within the last three months or admitted to the hospital within 2 weeks because of Sickle cell anemia -related events or crisis.'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT02467257', 'briefTitle': 'Gum Arabic as Fetal Hemoglobin Agent in Sickle Cell Anemia', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Al-Neelain University'}, 'officialTitle': 'Potential Role of Gum Arabic as Fetal Hemoglobin Agent in Sudanese Sickle Cell Anemia Patients', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'AlNeelainU'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'EXPERIMENTAL', 'label': 'Intrevention arm', 'description': 'Patients received Gum Arabic as intervention', 'interventionNames': ['Dietary Supplement: Gum Arabic']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'Gum Arabic', 'type': 'DIETARY_SUPPLEMENT', 'description': 'oral ingestion of 30 gram every day for 12 weeks', 'armGroupLabels': ['Intrevention arm']}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '1113', 'city': 'Omdurman', 'state': 'Khartoum State', 'country': 'Sudan', 'facility': 'Military Hospital', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 15.64453, 'lon': 32.47773}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Amal M Saeed, PhD', 'role': 'STUDY_DIRECTOR', 'affiliation': 'University of Khartoum Faculty of Medicine Department of Physiology'}, {'name': 'Lamis AA Kaddam, MSc', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Department of physiology Faculty of Medicine Alneelain University Khartoum,'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Al-Neelain University', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'collaborators': [{'name': 'Military hospital', 'class': 'UNKNOWN'}, {'name': 'Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Republic of Sudan', 'class': 'OTHER_GOV'}], 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'investigatorTitle': 'Dr', 'investigatorFullName': 'Lamis Kaddam', 'investigatorAffiliation': 'Al-Neelain University'}}}, 'annotationSection': {'annotationModule': {'unpostedAnnotation': {'unpostedEvents': [{'date': '2017-01-26', 'type': 'RELEASE'}, {'date': '2017-03-15', 'type': 'RESET'}], 'unpostedResponsibleParty': 'Lamis Kaddam, Dr, Al-Neelain University'}}}}
