Tumor samples (in the form of paraffin block material or, in rare cases, frozen) may also be obtained from the hospital where the patient underwent surgery.\n\nWhite blood cells are assayed for DNA/RNA isolation to look at genetic variants. DNA is extracted from saliva to look at genetic variants. Plasma/serum samples are analyzed to look at proteins and serological markers. Tumor samples are used to review the histology type. Nucleic acids are extracted from tumor sample sections; retrieval of a small (0.6 mm) core from each section is used to construct a tissue microarray which are be analyzed by immunohistochemistry and FISH.\n\nPeer Reviewed and Funded or Endorsed by Cancer Research UK.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 1,000 patients per cancer (gastric and esophageal) and 2,000 controls will be accrued for this study.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['CHILD', 'ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '16 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': True, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Must meet 1 of the following criteria:\n\n * Diagnosis of gastric or esophageal adenocarcinoma\n\n * Diagnosed within the past 5 years\n * May include gastro-esophageal junction tumor\n * Spouse or relative of the patient\n * Samples collected from the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer (EPIC) study\n* Patients will be approached to participate in the study regardless of their current treatment being curative or palliative, medical or surgical, or if they are currently having follow-up clinical appointments\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Not specified\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\n* See Disease Characteristics'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00963092', 'briefTitle': 'Study of Blood and Tissue Samples From Patients With Stomach Cancer, Esophageal Cancer, or Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer', 'organization': {'class': 'NIH', 'fullName': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)'}, 'officialTitle': 'Stomach and Oesophageal Cancer Study (SOCS)', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CRUK-UC-SOCS-03-5-064'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'CDR0000636974', 'type': 'REGISTRY', 'domain': 'PDQ (Physician Data Query)'}, {'id': 'EU-20911'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'DNA analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'RNA analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'microarray analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'protein analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'cytology specimen collection procedure', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'laboratory biomarker analysis', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'questionnaire administration', 'type': 'OTHER'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': 'CB2 0RE', 'city': 'Cambridge', 'state': 'England', 'status': 'RECRUITING', 'country': 'United Kingdom', 'contacts': [{'name': 'Carlos Caldas', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'phone': '44-1223-404-420'}], 'facility': 'Cancer Research UK at Cambridge Research Institute', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 52.2, 'lon': 0.11667}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Carlos Caldas', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Cancer Research UK'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Cancer Research UK', 'class': 'OTHER'}}}}
