Atelectasis impairs gas exchange, thus causing hypoxemia and other respiratory disorders such as acute lung injury and pneumonia.\n\nPneumoperitoneum is another risk factor for perioperative atelectasis. It elevates the diaphragm and intra-abdominal pressure.
