Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells.\n\nPURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combination chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy in treating patients who have esophageal cancer.', 'detailedDescription': 'OBJECTIVES:\n\n* Determine the median and two-year disease-free and overall survival of patients with resectable esophageal cancer treated with neoadjuvant paclitaxel, cisplatin, and fluorouracil with concurrent radiotherapy.\n* Determine the complete and partial responses in patients treated with this regimen.\n* Assess the toxicity of this regimen in these patients.\n* Determine the optimal dose of paclitaxel when administered in this regimen in these patients.\n* Determine the effect of tumor tubulin isoform expression on chemosensitivity and overall survival of patients treated with this regimen.\n\nOUTLINE: Patients receive paclitaxel IV over 3 hours and cisplatin IV over 1 hour on day 1. Treatment repeats every 3 weeks for 2 courses.\n\nBeginning 3 weeks after completion of initial chemotherapy, patients receive concurrent chemoradiotherapy comprising paclitaxel IV over 1 hour and cisplatin IV over 1 hour on days 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29; fluorouracil IV continuously for 5 weeks; and radiotherapy daily 5 days a week for 5 weeks.\n\nAt 4-8 weeks after completion of chemoradiotherapy, patients may undergo surgical resection. Patients with local progressive disease after 2 courses of initial chemotherapy undergo surgical resection instead of receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy.\n\nPatients are followed within 6 weeks, every 3 months for 3 years, and then annually for 2 years.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 14-30 patients will be accrued for this study.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma, squamous cell, adenosquamous, or undifferentiated carcinoma of the esophagus or gastroesophageal junction\n\n * Potentially resectable disease\n* No malignant celiac node involvement\n* No cervical esophageal carcinoma\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\nAge:\n\n* 18 and over\n\nPerformance status:\n\n* ECOG 0-2\n\nLife expectancy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nHematopoietic:\n\n* Absolute neutrophil count at least 1,800/mm\\^3\n* Platelet count at least 100,000/mm\\^3\n\nHepatic:\n\n* Bilirubin no greater than 1.5 times upper limit of normal (ULN)\n* AST no greater than 3 times ULN\n\nRenal:\n\n* Creatinine no greater than 1.5 mg/dL OR\n* Creatinine clearance at least 60 mL/min\n\nOther:\n\n* No other malignancy within the past 3 years except nonmelanoma skin cancer or carcinoma in situ of the cervix\n* No significant medical or psychiatric illness that would preclude study\n* Not pregnant or nursing\n* Fertile patients must use effective contraception during and for at least 3 months after study\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\nBiologic therapy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nChemotherapy:\n\n* No prior chemotherapy for esophageal cancer\n\nEndocrine therapy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nRadiotherapy:\n\n* No prior thoracic radiotherapy\n\nSurgery:\n\n* See Disease Characteristics\n* No prior surgical resection of esophageal tumor'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00021320', 'briefTitle': 'Combination Chemotherapy Plus Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Esophageal Cancer', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Fox Chase Cancer Center'}, 'officialTitle': 'Phase II Evaluation Of Paclitaxel, Cisplatin And 5-Fluorouracil Given In Combination With Radiation Therapy Prior To Surgery In Patients With Resectable Esophageal Cancer', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CDR0000068769'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'P30CA006927', 'link': 'https://reporter.nih.gov/quickSearch/P30CA006927', 'type': 'NIH'}, {'id': 'FCCC-00003'}, {'id': 'NCI-G01-1982'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'cisplatin', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'fluorouracil', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'paclitaxel', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'conventional surgery', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}, {'name': 'neoadjuvant therapy', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}, {'name': 'radiation therapy', 'type': 'RADIATION'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '19111-2497', 'city': 'Philadelphia', 'state': 'Pennsylvania', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'Fox Chase Cancer Center', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 39.95238, 'lon': -75.16362}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Jonathan Cheng, MD', 'role': 'STUDY_CHAIR', 'affiliation': 'Fox Chase Cancer Center'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Fox Chase Cancer Center', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'collaborators': [{'name': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)', 'class': 'NIH'}], 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'SPONSOR'}}}}
