Patients are stratified according to histology (papillary vs clear cell).\n\nPatients receive 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) IV over 60-90 minutes on days 1, 4, 8, and 11. Treatment repeats every 21 days for up to 1 year in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.\n\nPatients are followed at 3 weeks and then every 3 months thereafter.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 24-74 patients (12-37 per stratum) will be accrued for this study within 6-20 months (clear cell stratum) and 2-5 years (papillary stratum).'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Histologically confirmed renal cell carcinoma\n\n * Papillary OR clear cell histology\n\n * If other histologies are present, clear cell or papillary must be predominant\n * Metastatic disease\n* Measurable disease\n\n * At least 1 unidimensionally measurable lesion ≥ 20 mm by conventional techniques OR ≥ 10 mm by spiral CT scan\n* No brain metastases unless previously treated with radiotherapy or surgery AND asymptomatic with no active brain metastases detectable by CT scan or MRI for ≥ 6 months\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\nAge\n\n* 18 and over\n\nPerformance status\n\n* Karnofsky 70-100%\n\nLife expectancy\n\n* Not specified\n\nHematopoietic\n\n* WBC ≥ 3,000/mm\\^3\n* Absolute neutrophil count ≥ 1,500/mm\\^3\n* Platelet count ≥ 100,000/mm\\^3\n\nHepatic\n\n* AST and ALT ≤ 1.5 times upper limit of normal (ULN)\n* Bilirubin ≤ 1.5 times ULN\n\nRenal\n\n* Creatinine ≤ 2.0 times ULN\n\nCardiovascular\n\n* No symptomatic congestive heart failure\n* No unstable angina pectoris\n* No cardiac arrhythmia\n* No severe valvular disease\n\nPulmonary\n\n* No severe debilitating pulmonary disease\n\nOther\n\n* Not pregnant or nursing\n* Negative pregnancy test\n* Fertile patients must use effective contraception\n* No allergy to egg or egg products\n* No history of allergic reactions attributed to compounds of similar chemical or biological composition to 17-N-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG)\n* No active or ongoing infection requiring IV antibiotics\n* No psychiatric illness or social situation that would preclude study compliance\n* No other uncontrolled illness\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\nBiologic therapy\n\n* No more than 1 prior cytokine-based regimen\n* No concurrent biologic therapy\n\nChemotherapy\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior chemotherapy (6 weeks for nitrosoureas or mitomycin)\n\nEndocrine therapy\n\n* Not specified\n\nRadiotherapy\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior radiotherapy\n* No concurrent radiotherapy\n\nSurgery\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior major surgery\n\nOther\n\n* Recovered from prior therapy\n* No more than 1 prior non-cytokine-based regimen\n* No other prior systemic treatment regimens\n* No other concurrent cytotoxic therapy\n* No other concurrent anticancer therapy\n* No other concurrent investigational agents'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00093405', 'briefTitle': '17-N-Allylamino-17-Demethoxygeldanamycin in Treating Patients With Metastatic Kidney Cancer', 'organization': {'class': 'NIH', 'fullName': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)'}, 'officialTitle': 'A Phase II Study Of 17-N-Allylamino-17-Demethoxy Geldanamycin (17-AAG)In Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CDR0000387952'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'MSKCC-04082'}, {'id': 'NCI-6479'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'tanespimycin', 'type': 'DRUG'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '10021', 'city': 'New York', 'state': 'New York', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 40.71427, 'lon': -74.00597}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Gnanamba V.
