Tumor tissue specimens are requested from the pathology departments.\n\nBlood samples are analyzed for single nucleotide polymorphisms and other polymorphic variants in candidate genes by polymerase chain reaction. Candidate genes include genes involved in the DNA damage response, programed cell death, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Tumor samples are analyzed by tissue microarrays using immunohistochemistry, denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography, and DNA sequencing to study genetic changes in the tumor.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 1,800 patients will be accrued for this study.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'FEMALE', 'stdAges': ['CHILD', 'ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Diagnosis of breast cancer\n\n * Newly diagnosed or metastatic disease\n* Resides within the North Trent Cancer Network (NTCRN) region\n* Undergoing therapy at NTCRN centers\n* Hormone receptor status not specified\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Female\n* Menopausal status not specified\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\n* No concurrent participation in another genetic study'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00463034', 'briefTitle': 'Genes That Affect Disease Progression in Women With Newly Diagnosed or Metastatic Breast Cancer', 'organization': {'class': 'NIH', 'fullName': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)'}, 'officialTitle': 'Genetic Factors Affecting Breast Cancer Progression', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CDR0000540737'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'SHEFF-05/Q2308/15'}, {'id': 'SHEFF-USMS-05/Q2308/15'}, {'id': 'EU-20726'}, {'id': 'SHEFF-STH13824'}, {'id': 'SHEFF-106364'}, {'id': 'GENFABRCA'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'microarray analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'polymerase chain reaction', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'polymorphism analysis', 'type': 'GENETIC'}, {'name': 'high performance liquid chromatography', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'immunohistochemistry staining method', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'laboratory biomarker analysis', 'type': 'OTHER'}, {'name': 'questionnaire administration', 'type': 'OTHER'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': 'S10 2RX', 'city': 'Sheffield', 'state': 'England', 'country': 'United Kingdom', 'facility': 'University of Sheffield School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 53.38297, 'lon': -1.4659}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Angela Cox, PhD', 'role': 'STUDY_CHAIR', 'affiliation': 'University of Sheffield'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'University of Sheffield', 'class': 'OTHER'}}}}
