Evidence from randomized controlled trials suggests that treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria, the presence of bacteria in the urine in the absence of urinary symptoms, is not beneficial. Despite this, one in three prescriptions for urinary indications are for asymptomatic bacteriuria.
