Several experiments by Bouchon and colleagues showed that TREM-1 mediates the acute inflammatory response to microbial products. Human tissues infected with bacteria are infiltrated with neutrophils and macrophages that express high levels of TREM-1. Conversely, TREM-1 is only weakly expressed in samples from patients with noninfectious inflammatory disorders. In addition, TREM-1 is shed from the membrane of activated phagocytes and can be found in a soluble form in body fluids. The presence of a soluble form of TREM-1 in samples of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from mechanically ventilated patients has been shown to be a good indicator of infectious pneumonia.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['CHILD', 'ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Minutes', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* Clinical diagnosis of pleural effusion\n* Pleural effusion proved by chest sonography\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* Conditions for which thoracentesis are contraindicated\n* Pregnancy'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00166894', 'briefTitle': 'Use of the Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-1 (TREM-1) in the Diagnosis of Pleural Effusion', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'National Taiwan University Hospital'}, 'officialTitle': 'Evaluation of the Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells-1 (TREM-1) as a Diagnostic Tool for Patients With Pleural Effusion', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': '9461700516'}}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'city': 'Taipei', 'status': 'RECRUITING', 'country': 'Taiwan', 'contacts': [{'name': 'Pan-Chyr Yang, MD, PhD', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'email': 'pcyang@ha.mc.ntu.edu.tw', 'phone': '886-2-2356-2867'}, {'name': 'Pan-Chyr Yang, MD, PhD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR'}], 'facility': 'National Taiwan University Hospital', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 25.05306, 'lon': 121.52639}}], 'centralContacts': [{'name': 'Pan-Chyr Yang, MD, PhD', 'role': 'CONTACT', 'email': 'pcyang@ha.mc.ntu.edu.tw', 'phone': '886-2-2356-2867'}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Pan-Chyr Yang, MD, PhD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'Department of International Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital'}]}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'National Taiwan University Hospital', 'class': 'OTHER'}}}}
