* T3-4, N0-3, M0
PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:

Performance Status:

Hematopoietic:
* WBC at least 2,000/mm\^3
* Platelet count at least 50,000/mm\^3
Hepatic:
* Bilirubin no greater than 3.0 mg/dL
* SGOT no greater than 3 times upper limit of normal
