Eligibility Criteria:
Inclusion Criteria:
* outpatients with clinically suspected deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities
Exclusion Criteria:
* history of previous venous thromboembolism
* clinical suspicion of pulmonary embolism
* life expectancy shorter than 3 months
* therapeutic doses of unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight heparin or oral anticoagulants for more than 48 hours
* another indication for anticoagulant treatment
* pregnancy
* age less than 18 years
* inaccessibility to follow-up
* refused participation in the study
