* admittance to an intensive care unit
Exclusion Criteria:
* recent surgery
* active bleeding
* known coagulation disorders
* discretion of the physician
* terminal illness (anticipated life expectancy \< 3months; e.g. due to cancer)
* pregnancy
* \<20000 platelets
