* Current diagnosis of COPD
* Ability to provide signed informed consent to participate
* \> 18 years of age
Exclusion Criteria:
* Concomitant valve surgery
* Urgent or emergent coronary surgery
* Current steroid therapy
* Active smoker and/or positive urine co-nicotine
