* first-time stroke
* receiving in-patient rehabilitation at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York, NY
Exclusion Criteria:
* hemorrhagic stroke
* brain stem or cerebellar infarct
* other pre-existing neurologic conditions
