Inclusion Criteria:
* neonate requiring lumbar puncture
* gestational age at birth equal to or greater than 34 weeks
Exclusion Criteria:
* on mechanical ventilation
* receiving sedation (opioids or benzodiazepines)
* suspected congenital spinal anomaly
* infants older than 1 week of life
