•elective open heart surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass
Exclusion Criteria:
* inability to provide informed consent
* allergy to insulin
* pregnancy
* mother tongue other than English or French
* visual or hearing impairment interfering with the ability to complete cognitive tests.
