* birth weight 500 to 1,250g
* clinically stable
* no contraindications to initiating minimal enteral feeding
Exclusion Criteria:
* birth weight \> 1,250g
* clinically unstable
* any major congenital anomaly
* significant GI pathology
* severe IUGR
* cholestasis
