Inclusion Criteria:
* undergoing surgery with a planned perineural catheter for postoperative analgesia
* catheter in the interscalene, infraclavicular, popliteal, or femoral anatomic location
* age 18 years or older
Exclusion Criteria:
* pregnancy
* inability to communicate with the investigators and hospital staff
* incarceration
