Inclusion Criteria:
* meet the DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia as confirmed by modified SCID
Exclusion Criteria:
* meet the full syndromal criteria for other Axis I disorder
* have taken any depot antipsychotic within 4 weeks before screening
* are taking mood-stabilizing agents
