Inclusion Criteria:
* Patients (age 18 - 80 years) with acute STEMI undergoing PCI
Main Exclusion Criteria:
* Hemoglobin levels \>15g/dL
* history of a myeloproliferative syndrome
* thrombolysis for index infarction
* anticipated additional revascularization within 3 months
* cardiogenic shock
