* Alert adults
* requiring opioids for pain management (routine)
* cancer diagnosis or non-cancer diagnosis as their terminal illness
Exclusion Criteria:
* pregnant women
* Age \< 18
* minimally or unresponsive patients unable to take oral medications
* agitated combative patients
