* eligible for total thyroidectomy
* no previous history of neck surgery or radiation
* no vocal cord pathology
* no voice disorders
Exclusion Criteria:
* not fit for surgery
* previous history of neck surgery or radiation
* vocal cord pathology
* vocal cord movement disorders
